doTERRA is based in Pleasant Grove, Utah and founded in 2008. doTERRA applies strict quality control standards for their essential oils and describe this as “Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade (CPTG)” which they have trademarked. It’s their internal process for measuring the purity, potency, and consistency of each batch.
doTERRA’s testing includes GC/MS testing, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), heavy metal testing, organoleptic testing, and microbial testing.
That all sounds very extensive, but I was surprised that their website discloses their solvent extraction which you could easily miss reading this amongst the library of information there. Here’s come key disclosures “Choosing a good solvent is an important first step. Typically, less polar compounds (such as pentane or hexane) or alcohols (such as methanol or ethanol) are used as solvents.” Then this surprise “Only 1–5 percent of the solvent will remain in the final product.”
Credit to doTERRA for being honest. So knowing they are using solvent/hexane extraction, these petrochemicals appear in the final products. Many companies do this because it produces 2 to 3 times the amount of oil from the plant.
doTERRA partners with expert growers, harvesters, chemists, etc. to provide the highest quality and most potent essential oils. They do not own their own farms and don’t disclose the identities of their supplies and external laboratories.
doTERRA is a global player and has an estimated $5.1B market size and over 3M customers and wellness advocates (distributors) so there is definitely a demand for their products.
doTERRA is an MLM company, this could be a “turn off” to some people. However, it is possible to make some money selling their products. They have a competitive pay structure. You can even get started as a “Wellness Advocate” and sell their products online versus the traditional door to door or brick and mortar way.
Overall, doTERRA has high-quality essential oils. Their prices are a bit higher than others, and the quality may raise concerns for those very particular about their health. You can read more in my full doTERRA review.

Young Living is well-known as the world’s global leader in producing the best, purest and most authentic Essential Oils. So if you’re going to leverage this booming industry, you may well consider partnering with the best quality, if integrity and purity are important to you and your customers.
I cover the Young Living product quality extensively in my Young Living Review. This includes comprehensive research and analysis of the product quality and particularly the Young Living difference.
There is competition in the industry, many competitors use impressive sounding marketing terms like “therapeutic grade”, “pure” etc. So your customers may find it hard to know for your customers which are the best essential oil brands? After all, this is an industry that isn’t regulated by the FDA. Oil quality varies greatly depending on the distillation process and traces right back to the plants, seeds and soil.
Pretty well all the companies I researched used solvents in solvent extraction for some oils. With solvent/hexane extraction, there are petrochemicals in the final products. This is widely used throughout the industry to extract 2 to 3 times the amount of oil from the plants but at a cost of these solvents, synthetics, fillers and impurities remaining in the final product.
To truly help your audience and customer base, do you want an essential oil with these chemicals in it? What could those chemicals cocktails be doing to people’s bodies?
I queried Young Living’s Product Support team for more detail on how Young Living do it differently to NOT use solvents for flower material. Here’s their reply:
“We do not use alcohol, CO2 extraction, or solvents of any kind in the distillation process for our essential oils. Solvent extraction is only used for absolutes (Jasmine and Onycha). Ethanol is used as the solvent for our absolutes. The solvent is flashed off during the extraction process leaving only the natural components found in the plant material.”
Unlike the competitors, Young Living does own their own farms so that’s how they control the whole process. Literally from Seed, the Soil right through every process to Sealing the essential oil bottles. They do exhaustive and stringent testing covering the entire process. They also have an open policy on farm visits.
Another factor setting Young Living apart is their Lacey Act Compliance Program. This is all about sustainability of plants, making them the only essential oil company to have made the effort to be recognized by the US government with that compliance.\
Young Living is a global player and most well-known essential oils company with over $1.5 Billion in annual sales and over 4M customers and members (distributors), with products shipped to over 133 countries and growing. So there is definitely a demand for their products and you can have a global customer base.
Again like doTERRA, Young Living is an MLM company, this may be a “turn off” to some people. However, of course it’s possible to make some money selling their products. They have a competitive pay structure. You can even get started as a Young Living wholesale “Member” and sell their products online versus the traditional face to face, or brick and mortar way.

I make soap in my spare time (hahaha… not so much of late!) but nevertheless, I make soap.
But my slant on it is that I don’t use any palm oil, synthetic fragrances, synthetic micas, or plastic. Instead I use natural oils, colours – cocoa, turmeric, alkanet, spirulina etc and essential oils. Its not easy in soap to use sufficient to keep the scent in the soap, and people expect it to be as strong as if it was a chemical fragrance which is never going to happen, so I use clays in my soaps to help hold the scent.
I have to use specific companies for my essential oils because all the soap recipes have to be toxicologically tested for EU regulations and the suppliers must be stated. I had to do quite a lot of research into essential oils to create the scents I wanted for the soaps, along with the potential allergens in the essential oils too…
If I had more time, I might even make my own essential oils, I love the idea of that but I wish having read your article that I could go to one of the essential oil academies and learn more.

I thought Rocky Mountain has discontinued their affiliate program. Glad to see that they have reopened because I love their stuff. But wow, there are sure a lot of competing companies, brands that I’ve not even heard of before. Some even pay up to 40% – that’s a lot of profit to be made in this booming industry.

I use essential oils myself on a regular basis, and know just how good they are, so why not write about my experiences and get paid when people try out my recommendations?
I appreciate your attention to detail when it comes to the quality of products and the reasons behind selling only the best. It is hard to go wrong when you stick to the best quality, and even if the prices are higher, many people are willing to pay more to get that quality. It is always easy to sell quality no matter the price from my experience.
It is also helpful that you have ranked the top programs from best to acceptable too. I will be going after the buyers that want only the best quality and those that want value but are willing to spend more than the bottom feeder that is only concerned with price.

Depending on your niche and your exact avatar or target audience, you can have success with most of the companies here. From the two you have selected, the highest paying programs are offered by “Dharmaceuticals” or “Color Earth”. They both have high quality essential oils.
Some key differences I noted were their product offerings:
Dharmaceuticals sells a variety of products, including essential oils, body sprays, bath salts, bubble baths and shower gels, and spritz aromatherapy room sprays.
Color Earth offers a range of nutritional supplements, healthy chocolate, alkalizing products, essential oils and $250 to $1,000 package sets.
I suggest really looking into these product offerings to see what best helps your target audience. I do note that Color Earth did not appear to be an essential oils specialist, but their package sets seemed really convenient and you can help your target customers buy these, this is a convenient, higher ticket item that could also earn you higher commissions.
Please do your own research into the best product lines to help your audience.

Spot on, I have ordered the affiliate programs in income order, and its exciting the so many have affiliate commissions of 40% scaling down to 15% or more. I had to include both Rocky Mountain Oils and Plant Therapy in the review as they are very big players in the market and successful within their respective niches.

Who would have ever thought that essential oils would have been such a lucrative affiliate market? It honestly never even crossed my mind until I read through your article but it completely makes sense.
The one thing that is probably not specific to the essential oils but is something I think is very important is to research what people actually want in the specific product or niche you plan on marketing. It makes it easier to target a specific audience.
