For some people it’s an outdoor or social activity, while for other people it means enjoying time alone doing something you love.

You can choose an interest, hobby or passion of any kind, and turn this into a reliable income using the internet. Positively you can do this.

There may be various ways you can do this, but one of the best methods is affiliate marketing.

The plan is to start with a topic that interests you, and build a simple website where you discuss this topic in detail. Next, you learn how to attract people to your site who are interested in this same topic. This is known as ‘traffic’ to your website and comes from search engines like Google. The best thing about this is, when people come to your website through Google (in the way I show you) it doesn’t cost you anything!

So when you have people on your website you can make money by promoting other people’s products as an affiliate.

Many of us have taken part in affiliate marketing without even realizing it. For example, have you ever shared a discount code or a link to a product or website or App with a friend where you will get something in return?

I have shared my Airbnb link so my friend gets $25 off their first stay (and I get that too). Also, when you refer your friends to take Uber, Uber will reward you with a coupon code. This is affiliate marketing! So anyone can do affiliate marketing!

This is a very simple business model and means you don’t need tо do selling in person, create уоur own productѕ, stoсk anything, deal with customers, handle shipping, оr any of that stuff. You simply direct people who are on your website to products they are already looking for and then they buy happily.

There are millions of products you can promote as an affiliate, and it doesn’t costs you anything to do this. For example, companies like Amazon.com pay you to promote their products on your website, and there are more great companies and thousands of affiliate programs you can partner with.

That’s the basic idea, please read on to see an example of how this works in practice.

Example Hobby – Photography

There are heaps of different hobbies this method can work for, but to show you how it works, I decided to choose photography. No particular reason, it’s a common example of a hobby and many people love to take photo’s with family, friends and the outdoors.

Ok. So rather than trying to cover the topic of “photography” on our website, we want to get a bit more focused to give ourselves the best possible chance of attracting visitors.

The more targeted and relevant you are, the lower is your competition and the easier it will be for your “hobby related” content to get ranked in Google. Remember, when you have people visiting your website, you can make money as an affiliate.

Some broad website ideas:

• Camera Accessories: Accessories such as camera’s, lenses, apparel, tripods etc
• Photography Tips: All kinds of photography related tips for different situations, settings and environments
• How to become a successful photographer: software to tweak your pictures, or even how to see your photos online

You can build a successful website based on any one of the above three example topics.

Best to be aware that would require a lot of time and effort because of how broad those topics are. As a beginner, you really want to start with choosing a topic that is more targeted or narrower topics within the broad topic.

We have to remember that there are over 4 billion (yes, BILLION) people online, so choosing a broad niche will surely give you a massive audience to market to, but you are going to find it really hard to become an authority in a broad niche. People sometimes choose “health” or “travel” or “dieting” or “music”, when the reality is that these are far too broad and there are literally 100’s if not 1,000’s of targeted niches within these much broad categories.

Choosing a targeted niche will mean lower competition and a much easier task of getting into profit. The best way is to start broad, and drill narrower to come up with much more focused and targeted ideas for your website.

Some targeted website ideas:

• Camera Accessories
  • Lenses for DSLR camera
  • Cleaning your camera and accessories
  • Camera lighting aids
  • Using viewfinder accessories for different situations
  • Camera accessories for travel

As you can see, we came up with a bunch of great ideas within “camera accessories” alone and each of these would make a great website and content ideas.

So, we went from our hobby of “photography” into “camera accessories” and I highlighted “camera accessories for travel” because this is an great example of a targeted website.

How can you do that research to begin with?

It’s not difficult, but it is a process. I’ve already written a useful post on this topic to help you find a profitable niche. It may be worth reading that post to get some more insight into this. If you go to Amazon.com, and go to the Departments tab on the homepage, you will get a list of all the categories.

Other Profitable Hobby Ideas

Not everyone reading this will be interested in photography, and fair enough.

I’m not either, but I used it as a worthwhile example to illustrate the process.

You could use this exact process to come up with website ideas for from some other popular examples of hobbies:

• Golfing
• Scrapbook making
• Fishing
• Gardening
• Quilting
• Wine or craft beer making at home
• Antiques
• Many more ideas…

Any of the above ideas could be turned into a profitable website that makes you money.

There are LOADS of other ideas out there so try not to limit yourself. People make money doing this stuff in all kinds of niches like pets, brewing beer, home cooking, knitting, book genre’s and pretty much anything you could think of.

Choosing a topic that you’re passionate about has many benefits when it comes to this business model. For starters, you are already actively engaged in that interest or hobby. So you are going to be WAY more interested in writing content that people actually enjoy. I couldn’t imagine researching and writing about “organic oils” but I can guarantee you that there are plenty of people who will, and that there is plenty of money to be made in that niche.

After you have chosen your hobby topic, next it’s time to write some useful content.

Don’t worry about this, it’s not hard at all and you don’t need to be some kind of expert writer. The most important thing to understand when it comes to writing content that Google WANTS to rank is making sure it is relevant and useful to readers. This naturally comes from you sharing your experiences and stories. Can you tell a story?

By all means, there are many other things you will learn through reading, watching, bit of research and practicing. But this is the most important aspect, to start and practice your writing, not how “fancy” the writing is.

Remember, you are not actually selling anything, so you are not writing sales material and not even trying to “sell”.

You are simply researching and writing useful and relevant content about your topic, that others who are also interested in that topic are going to find valuable.

For example, say you are in the ‘scrapbook making niche’. When someone types “scrapbook making tips for beginners” your website can show up and since you know scrapbook making, people are going to learn from what you have written.

That’s it! It’s that simple.

You publish useful content, get it ranked by search engines and then you will have visitors on your website.

I don’t own any of those products, I simply directed people to where they can buy them.

Granted, only a percentage of people will buy anything from the banners above since this is just one article. But you can understand the point.

Let’s say you wrote many articles building to hundreds over time, and directed ALL of your visitors to ONE page where you placed a similar banner of your favorite product (and explained why it was your favorite) then you can make some lucrative money this way.
