I am a consumer of essential oils and do research into many markets to see where I can possibly make money online and also help others to do this. So if you’re looking to explore the “essential oils” niche, you can enter that into the Google Trends search bar and hey presto! Very rarely do I find one that is such a great opportunity as with essential oils. Take a look at this proof:

Those two lines represent Google searches since 2004. The red line is the general trend of “natural remedies”. You can see that it stagnated for a while, it has plateaued and even declined recently.

The blue line shows searches associated with “essential oils”. Interest quickly ramped since 2013, and there was an explosion of interest around 2015 onward, reaching peak interest in January 2018. There have been slight dips in between but it looks like a seasonal riser, regularly peaking around December/January each year. Even if the trend doesn’t continue to increase over the next few years, that still represents an enormous interest globally.

The essential oils industry/niche is pretty well evergreen because there are just so many uses for them and so many people love them.

And using a keyword research tool I use, I can get an approximate number of how many people search for essential oils on Google every month:

There’s over 50,000 searches every month!. A lot of people are searching each and every month, so this is further proof that this is a great business to get into.

As well as that gigantic number, there are virtually thousands of related searches that you can readily take advantage of to grow your business (shown further below).

This data shows you that the market is good and there is money to be made. Apart from the data, think for a moment – how many uses are there for essential oils? Hundreds? Thousands! They can be used to relieve pain, reduce stress, a range of health benefits, improve your happiness and mood, and even be used as a bug repellent and cleaner.

In my case, i’m just a average guy that believed that if the house was clean enough, that’s probably enough. Recently my wife loves using essential oils at home and so I have begun to appreciate the aroma from the diffuser around our home, so the house smells fresh when people visit. I’m also very health conscious and i’ve been introduced to the range of health benefits from my naturopath to improve my own health and other family members. I’ve always loved lavender and now my personal choices are peppermint for fragrance and lemon oil for health.

My example of my own experience goes to show you that everyone is a potential market and a possible customer – not just ladies!. Men, moms, parents, sick, healthy, happy, depressed, young people, older people…everyone. It just depends on the customer you intend to market and who you want to reach out to and help with essential oils.

How To Make Money Selling Essential Oils

There are many ways that you can earn money from an essential oils business. I am going to explain how we can do it online.

I’ll cover briefly various options for you to consider and get into detail about the one I’m most confident with (and thrilled about) later in this post:

1. Network Marketing or Direct Selling
2. Open Your Own Online Store
3. White Labelling and Reselling on Marketplaces Like Amazon, eBay and Etsy
4. Affiliate Marketing – Build a Niche Website (Blog)

How to sell essential oils with Network Marketing or Direct Selling

You may have arrived on this page because you were researching either doTERRA or Young Living. These are the two biggest players in the network marketing industry for essential oils. They don’t offer an affiliate program, instead they offer what’s called a Multi-Level Marketing system that’s based more on “one-on-one” sharing with others.

I value the highest quality essential oils so am a customer member of Young Living, you can check out my review here.

In multi-level or network marketing, How people try to make money is by joining a team of “independent associates”, become a distributor and sell products to the public. Sales are often by word of mouth and direct sales. Usually distributors earn commissions for their own sales and also for sales made by the people they recruit.

For example, if your friend Maria brings you into the company, your startup package and also a percentage of your sales create income for her. Then if you recruit people into the company, their startup packages and a percentage of their sales will create income for you.

This is why it’s called “multi level” marketing (MLM), because you get paid on different levels.

Most MLM companies pay total commissions of around 30 to 45 percent of the price sold to distributors for resale, or prices for which consumers buy directly from the company. Many MLM companies that market their products through distributors sell quality items at competitive prices. But some offer goods that are overpriced. I have noticed that the products are usually more expensive than what you find in stores and on Amazon. So if you’re interested in a product from an MLM company, go check Amazon first.

Another thing i’m wary of is that your earnings really rely on how many people you recruit for the company. It also means that you are bolted onto promoting only one company, rather than being objective and choosing the best option for your customers.

So unless you’re actively building your MLM business and team and in the typically top 1% of associates and receiving your chunk of that 30-45% assigned to commissions, then when you buy the higher priced products you are effectively paying for the commissions of others.

However, some people really enjoy being in the network marketing industry, and they like the people and team aspect of growing a business with other people and building those relationships. Is this the right essential oils business opportunity for you?

But if you LOVE the oils from Young Living or DoTERRA you can still build a blog and promote their products using their product links to complement your MLM business.  You’ll need a website for this. Running a blog around essential oils can be a vehicle to drive massive sales online for this business model for sure.

Open an Online Store

This is another approach where you get to sell your own oils online. The easiest way is to buy the essential oils by white-labeling (refer below) at wholesale from an oil producer then sell online. Or if you’re really keen you could even make the oils at home.

Building an online store is simple enough and exciting to do. You can use platforms like Shopify or WordPress to help you build an eCommerce site.

If you want to learn how to start selling essential oils from your own online store, read on. Anyone with a computer can start in a matter of hours without special skills.

The three main things you need to start is:

1. A domain name (this will be the name of your online store/business name I.e www.myshop.com)
2. A web hosting account (this is like the home where your website lives on the internet)
3. Your undivided attention for 60 minutes.

Yes, it is that simple to set up an online shop.

You can set up your own online store with WordPress in around 30 minutes and the tutorial below will walk you through each step of the process.

This video covers all the steps I’ve listed so you can start building your website and get it up and running. However, it does not cover how to get traffic to your website or customers to your products. If you prefer the affiliate marketing option, no worries! you can still use the same steps to startup a blog ready to earn money with affiliate marketing.

Remember a website without traffic is like a signpost in the desert! White Labelling and reselling on marketplaces like Amazon, eBay and Etsy

White-label products and services are re-brandable, re-sellable items that are produced by one company to be rebranded and resold by someone else e.g. you. “Private label” and “white-label” means the same thing. So in the case of essential oils you would contact a wholesaler of essential oils, then create your own “brand” by labelling them as your own. So the wholesaler creates the oils and provide the bottles, but you can send them your own labelling and bottles if you wish, and market them as your own.

Then how you market them is up to you

A big advantage over network marketing is you’re not paying for grossly overpriced oils so not padding someone else’s upline. Instead you’re buying them at wholesale but you do have the risk of carrying inventory. Also you need to consider are they the best essential oils on the market and what about product liability issues?

You may not be aware, but loads of brands for commonly known products are already do this. Did you know you can white label software, coffee, clothing, even whiskey? Yup. Starbucks is an example of a company that white-labels their coffee products for Costco to relabel under the Kirkland brand to then sell to end consumers (or businesses, whatever you use your Costco membership for, no judgments here).

The key point here is that you too can do the same thing with essential oils. Buy at low-cost from the wholesaler, then package as your own, finally resell them under your own brand. You could sell them from your home, at a mall or market stand, or even on your own website.

You can also sell them on online marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay and Etsy. Note that depending on the company you wholesale from, some allow and will ship directly to Amazon etc and some won’t. For example Plant Therapy is quite a reputable essential oils company and it does not allow resellers to sell on marketplaces including (but not limited to) Amazon, EBay, Etsy, etc.

If you do choose an essential oil white-labeller that allows reselling on Amazon etc, then you should note that this is EXTREMELY difficult to do UNLESS, you are already selling other products on Amazon. If your goal is to sell essential oils on Amazon, it’s recommended to contact the folks at Amazon FIRST and make sure that you can sell your product on Amazon and also find out all the details that you need to pass on to the wholesaler, like special label requirements, bar codes, special packing requirements, etc.

But selling by AMAZON FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon) is possible if you are prepared to jump through those hoops.

With Amazon FBA, you may not know it, but a lot of what you buy on Amazon is not actually sold by “Amazon” the company. Some products are sold by individual people who ship their products to Amazon, then Amazon distributes the products for them.

Amazon is playing the go-between role. Sellers provide their warehouses with products. Amazon offers the storage space, the transaction systems, the website maintenance and security, and an enormous network of shipping channels to get products to customers as quickly as possible.

For you being a seller and a business, your goal is to ensure that you purchase your product at a low enough price that you can resell it on Amazon and still make a profit after fees, taxes, and other related costs.

Competition is a big issue, since there’s already a lot of products listed there, but competition just means that people are making money, so it could be a healthy market to be in!

Similar to Amazon, you could use eBay or Etsy to sell your product. Both are well-known sites, with regular shoppers. Again, you have to take into account shipping costs and listing fees and, but working through those details will be part of a more specific and detailed business plan.

In considering how to make money with essential oils, some key factors to be aware of with white-labelling and Amazon FBA are:

• That you’d need to stay on top of the product
• Know what all the features and benefits are etc.
• Because of the nature of essential oils, you’d need product liability insurance.
  • For example, if one of your customers use a citrus oil they purchased from you and they go outside and get a severe sunburn because of the oil, they may go after you as the seller.
• Competition!
  • White label supplier could even be your competition, especially if they sell to the same type of customer.
  • Amazon could even compete against you on your own listing with the same product, but unbranded from Amazon. Does Amazon really care about you?
• How long will the Amazon wave last for?
  • Amazon is sort of like a drug, a drug that can get you quick sales in a short period but making you addicted and dependent on their marketplace.
  • Proceed with caution, think long term, and direct some of your time and focus into your own branded website.
  • EBay is already pretty saturated with cheap products. Is Amazon headed the same way?

For these risks, it’s not my cup of tea, too many risks and headaches for my liking. Let’s look at my favorite option.

Affiliate Marketing – Build a Niche Website (Blog)

The MLM model requires you to have minimum monthly spend and also to have products that you sell to others as stock in your home. With affiliate marketing you don’t have any of that hassle!

The cool thing about this type of business is that you don’t have to do a lot of stuff that traditional business owners and eCommerce sites have to deal with. You don’t have to:

• keep any inventory
• purchase wholesale products
• worry about credit cards or secure purchases
• do customer service at all
• deal with return, refunds, or unhappy customers

All of that stuff goes through the seller. You are only responsible for advertising. You should only work with brands you know have a good reputation. Then all you need to do is provide a link to a product on your website and the sellers brand does the hard work for you. Then you simply need to do is focus on getting people to the seller’s website.

There are various ways to do this, but the easiest, cheapest, and the most enjoyable way to do it is by creating a website. Website creation is easy these days, and there are many easy to use website builders out there that you can use to create an attractive looking website to promote products for the companies you work with. Creating an affiliate website has a much smaller cost than you would have with setting up an eCommerce store (and without all those headaches!).

When people click the tracking affiliate links on your website and purchase products from the seller, you get commission! There are more ways to make money from your website (shown below), but this is the basics of how make money through affiliate marketing by partnering with essential oils companies.

Using a website to earn income is just so exciting because your website is online 24/7/365 and accessible to the entire world! People could be reading your posts and buying online through your affiliate links at any time of the day, all over the world. When was the last time you saw a local shop that was open all day and all night and could sell to customers in London, Singapore and Boston all at the same time?

Reaching Out To Essential Oil Buyers With A Website

As I mentioned earlier, the BEST way to reach your customers is by having a website. Whatever business model you choose, no matter how you look at it, there are more people on the internet than people you know personally. Yes over 4 billion people online out there.

So if you want more buyers, then you need to reach out to people online and get them interested in whatever it is you are promoting or selling. I’ll discuss the details of how to reach those people in the next section.

To reach the entire world (or at least the entire English-speaking world), then its best to pick a regular .com domain name. Dot coms are perfect for affiliate marketing (what I do) and rank best on search engines. There are more than 4 billion people online and each one is a potential customer for you. Better still, with the growing population of the world, more and more people are getting internet access every day.

If you are promoting a product that only delivers within the borders of your own country – that’s OK. You can buy a domain name with the specific extension matching your country. For example, instead of domain.com, you can select domain.ca, domain.co.uk, domain.com.au, or domain.jp. This could work for you if you want to create a blog promoting the product links for your MLM company doTERRA or Young Living which often have country specific product affiliate links rather than global affiliate links. But can you see how limiting that is compared to a global market?

If creating a website sounds a bit daunting to you, don’t worry. The technology has advanced so much in recent years that it is a simple process now. There are tons of different website builders out there. These can give you a ready-made website in minutes, and allow you to easily customize the website to how you want it to look. You can add templates, videos, images, landing pages, and apps with a few clicks to give you a very professional and attractive website.

Most people surfing the internet don’t really care how good-looking your website is, they surf the web to read and gather information from them!

The most important thing on your website will definitely be the articles you publish on it. This is what ‘blogging’ is all about.

Years ago, blogging was like a personal online diary, but now blogs are businesses.

Running a blog around essential oils can be a vehicle to drive sales online for any of the business models we discussed above. So whether you choose network marketing selling/recruiting, driving sales to your online store, white label reselling, or affiliate marketing – your website is your gateway to the world.

How To Get People To Your Website

Getting your website up and looking nice is the easy bit, the hard bit is to get visitors (traffic) to your website and buy your oils.

The key is to get on the first page and preferably in the top three in Google, and as a .com business owner you are competing with the big players of the global market.

The great news is that most online business owners have no idea how to actually rank on page one, but I do. I’ve got years of experience, and I can show you how I do it. The secret to selling essential oils online is keyword research

Using a few online tools that you can access and learn also, you can actually take advantage of Google’s data and find out what people search for every day. I can see if there are a lot of people searching for something, or just a few people. I can also see how many competing websites there are, and whether the competition is easy or hard.

For example, I know that there are 615 people searching for the term “essential oils for wrinkles” every month, and that there are around 100 websites competing for this phrase. That’s a quite a few, considering there are only 10 spots on Google page one!

Let’s dive in further and say you’re promoting Young Living essential oils for example. By simply typing in other keyword phrases like “Young Living essential oils for headaches”, shows there are only 8 competing websites for that search term. Awesome…only 8 websites in the entire world! I could definitely outrank them. If I can get my website to page one for that phrase, then a total of 80 people will reach my website every day and consider purchasing something.

Can you reach out to 80 people every day, 365 days a year? No way! So whether you choose old school network marketing, your own online store or affiliate marketing, think of how many people you can reach passively. The power of having a website and being able to rank it in search engines can give you access to the world 24/7.

When doing my quick searching above, I came across really great article ideas and niche site ideas here too. There are tons of people searching for “Young Living essential oils for autism”, “acne”, “psoriasis” and even “for dogs”, 96 people looking “for dogs”. Does that give you some ideas?

However, not every page on our website will rank initially, but over time, if you consistently post articles on low competition topics, then you increase your website authority on the topic and start generating more traffic. The traffic is cumulative and as you publish more content, your traffic and website authority grows. I have some websites that get over 1,000 visits per month.

That’s 1,000 potential clients every month and growing for my business.

The topics you can write about on your website about essential oils are limitless, for example “essential oils for cats” or even “how to make your own cleaning products with essential oils”. You could also write about “how to make essential oils at home” or “natural remedies for anxiety”. and the list goes on.

Here’s more search results from typing in search “which essential oils do what”:

Each month there are 93 search using this sentence, and only 77 pages in Google using it. Look also at “what does lavender essential oil do”, even more traffic and only 22 pages using it. This means that you have real chances to have you articles on the first page of Google and gain the free traffic and the earnings from this simple research of keywords.

So if essential oils are a true passion of yours, or you enjoy researching this topic and writing about what you learn, then there are literally thousands of things to write about.

For even more traffic, you can create video’s for your YouTube channel and load them on your website. People love show and tells. Take an idea like showing people how to make homemade cleaning products from essential oils, make a video and add it to your blog for example.

It’s fun finding keywords, here’s one more amazing one I just happened to find. High traffic, low competition…it’s a great way to get potentially 3,000 people onto your site and buying oils for their dogs!

4 Simple Ways To Make Money From Your Website

There are so many ways to make money online, it’s insane. But I don’t want to overwhelm you with information, so I’ll just cover 4 basic ways here. If you decide to create your essential oils business from a website, you’ll learn even more ways as you get ideas from other websites, social media or talk to people in the training and mentoring community i’m part of.

Affiliate Marketing

This is the most lucrative way to me because you can make regular commissions depending on what you promote and once setup those commissions become passive income. How this works is that you promote a product on your website, people click your link then these buyers purchase it from a different website. You simply say, “I recommend ______ product” and link to the seller’s website (through your affiliate link).

With essential oils there are hundreds of different types you could easily recommend with all their benefits. But not only that, you could recommend things like essential oil blends, different oil brands, diffusers, related essential oil products, books on how to use oils effectively, online meditation videos, and even courses on how to use the oils effectively Thinking broader you could also recommend related items like massage tools, hot and cold packs, other things you use in tandem with oils, even other natural remedies that you find online. The opportunities have no limits!

Affiliate marketing is the channel through which bloggers get connected to a brand and, simply promotes its products or services to earn commissions. Once you have your website going, You can use affiliate links in many ways – on social media, on your blog, YouTube, emails etc.

Display Ads

When you’re getting regular traffic to your website, you have this second main way to make money. Bloggers sign up to Ad networks and earn a share of what advertisers pay as revenue by displaying targeted Ads on their blogs. This is where Google, Mediavine, or similar companies will give you some code to place on your website. Then, ads are displayed automatically when a visitor lands on your site.
