The highest ranking posts on Google also mostly have the most backlinks (the number of external pages linking to that page). While writing outstanding content is the first and most essential step toward getting more backlinks, you may want to also consider a more proactive approach.

What is it about: Backlinks are the number of external pages linking to a specific page

Summary: Website traffic refers to people who visit a website. Web traffic is measured in visits, which are also called “sessions,” and is usually a way to measure an online business’ effectiveness at attracting and bringing in an audience. But is this enough for you to earn an income?

Creating content that is worthy of a link takes a lot of time, and skill —not to mention a good amount of knowledge of your niche. It may not be your sole target, but it can actually be a solid first step in building a sound and steady flow of income for your online business.

What are Backlinks About?

Whenever I search for competitors before writing a post on a specific keyword, one of the things I check first is the amount of backlinks they have.

So, what are backlinks?
Why do backlinks matter so much?

To start, backlinks refer to the number of external pages linking to a specific page. It could be a post or an article that other posts or articles use as reference. This just goes to show that the first thing you have to do is make sure that your post is something of value for people to link back to.

I mean —you have to give them a reason to read your post right? Even if it is similar to some other post or not really that original, you can do your magic to make it worthy of a read. Probably, you can make it more entertaining than others.

Best Practices to Build Backlinks

Most businesses, products, and services like yours are already worthy of links. You don’t have to spend countless hours creating a complex interactive infographic just to get backlinks.

As I mentioned in my introduction, anyone can build backlinks. However, you can make your life easier when you write content with a good opportunity for backlinks. You can make this your first priority. That is why a good set of tools can really be useful such as Ahrefs, UberSuggest and Jaxxy that gives you the hottest, most sought after, keywords.

But if you already have a bunch of posts written on your site, this doesn’t mean that you wasted your precious time. You can build links using what you already have on your website and dramatically speed up the process as long as you know the right steps.

Create Something Worthy Of A Link

One you’ve published a new post and made it the absolute best it can be, check out the best-performing posts for your target keyword. You can use a tool like Ahrefs, UberSuggest and Jaxxy to find all the sites that have linked to that post.

These tools can also help you identify your competition and find out how to make your post more badass.

How can you make sure your post is worthwhile?

Here are a few tips I found on Semrush that can guide you in writing a badass content other people can’t help linking back to.

  1. Be visual. You can make your post more visual by using infographics, images, and videos. This makes it more engaging and easier to understand for your readers.

  1. Make your own research. When you offer content with original, research-backed data using legit methods, you are likely to bring in backlinks from high-authority sites. So, remember to use original data, research, and survey results.
  2. Quote the experts. Adding expert interviews, quotes and roundups to your content makes it more reliable. Most people would want to make sure that their content is legit and if your content looks reliable enough, they’d definitely link back to you.
  3. Make sure to EAT. No, thanks, I’m full. Meh!

But you will never be too full to E-A-T. This concept is extremely important which stands for Expertise, Authority, Trustworthiness.

What is EAT about?

What is a more effective way to give authentic content than to share your own experiences? Don’t feel shy with sharing your failures and success to your audience. Your mistakes can actually help with adding value for others —probably be a living example of what NOT to do? Lol

Google is one smart thing. It is able to understand how content is given to those who seek it and rewards posts that give the best value. Posts that show much of the author’s first-hand experience in relation to what a user is seeking is Google’s favorite. Therefore, you need to show more first hand experience than that of fake reviews.

  1. Consider Search Intent. Make sure to create value-laden content. Focus on writing content that will provide value to readers such as detailed content, step-by-step guides, how to’s, and tutorials.

Bounce rates from cranky readers can be bad for you. This will definitely be the case if a user gets to your post and finds grammar error of pretentious content. Keep in mind the concept of search intent and make sure to bring value to users.

Just like with first hand experience, what Google likes to see is that your content caters for the needs of the users. Yes, length will be a factor to rank your post, but it’s not just the case of being long. Long posts don’t guarantee value —nor does it guarantee ranking.

Find Out the Right Tools

One your newly published post and is edited to its best, you can now check out the best-performing posts for your target keyword.

Then, use a tool like Ahrefs to find all the sites that have linked to that post.

How significant is this?

Like what Sun Tzu said “If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.

Heavy right? But really, you know the type of content to write and how to write it when you know and understand your competition.

Find People Who Might Be Interested In Linking To You

Okay, so now you know your competition, what do you do next?

The next thing to do now is find people who have a high possibility of being interested in linking their posts to you. They can definitely help bring significant traffic not only to your post but your site.

Be observant, try to reach out by first finding their email. The tricky part is if you send them a message through their page, a bot gets to it first and might just push your message in a corner. You can use tools such as FindThatLead and Hunter.io (there are a lot more out there) to find emails in various platforms.

So, once you have located the appropriate contact information, you can reach out to specific sites and quickly explain why your post is even better. Sell it and tell them how it is more thorough, useful, and valuable.

Basically, you are making a case for your post and why that’s the content that they should be sharing with their readers. Convince them to put a link to your post instead.

Persuade People To Link To You

This section and the one before this is where a good email outreach can work wonders.

You might not get a 100% response rate. However, if you have made a good argument in favor of your content, you’re bound to earn a few more backlinks, which can really make a difference in your traffic and rankings.

So as I hinted in the previous sections, it is really more effective to drop your message straight to a person’s inbox so make sure to hunt for these emails using the right tools.

When you get the info you need, make sure to diligently reach out to people to mention you or your post. Make sure that your email is personalized and engaging. Email campaigns are like hitting 2 birds with 1 stone.

It promotes your blog for linking and since you will put your link there they can also add to your traffic —and if your content is really good they can be your next client. Well that might be over reaching but a few hours of email outreach can be worth your time.

97.7% of affiliates hate link building.

The other 2.3% are sociopaths who enjoy talking to complete strangers.

I joke

But the truth is that getting backlinks is the least fun part of affiliate marketing for most of you.

The fun stuff is niche research, finding keywords, choosing products, designing a site, etc.

Speed

Yes we need it. Sadly, Google can also penalize your site for being slooooow.

Or, it can also be the reason why people would just get off your site before even reading what you wrote. I mean, imagine searching for something online and it takes you more than 3 seconds waiting for the post to show up on your screen. That can be pretty annoying, right? So what would your normal reaction be?

Site speed shows how quickly a website responds to web requests. This makes speeding up websites highly important — not just to site owners, but to all Internet users.

Faster sites create happy users with a better user experience. On the flip side, lower sites have less visitors, and if they ever get any their visitors tend to spend less time with them.

Consideration for No-follow Links

Google has decided to accord No-follow Links some consideration.

What is it?

Well to an average website user, dofollow and nofollow links look exactly the same. However, nofollow links include an attribute that lets search engine bots know not to follow the link.

How is it different from a dofollow link? Basically, a nofollow link has a nofollow tag. So this means that nofollow links don’t pass any PageRank to the website being linked.

A nofollow link tells search engines, for example Google, to not pass any link authority from your page to the other website that you’re linking to.

I guess they’re useless then, right? Erm —not exactly. Building nofollow links can actually be a great way to drive traffic. It turns out that nofollow links can help boost SEO, leverage social signals and influencer marketing. It can help start a domino-effect link-building strategy for you.

You can turn any link into a nofollow link by adding the following link attribute:

rel=”nofollow”

Bad Practices You Need To Improve

Focusing a Lot on The Link Only

The first thing you should be doing is to create worthwhile content.

I know. All the bells and whistles of needing to rank can confuse and mislead you.

Creating great content is necessary as the quality and relevance of content is the single most important factor that Google considers for ranking. It seems that this is how Google processes a page. It is all about satisfying user search intent and user experience.

Your website posts rank good only if both backlinks and content are decent enough. Initially, Google assesses the quality of backlinks, and then it checks the content.

Creating a Lot of Backlinks

You must find it so weird to read on my post how creating backlinks is in the list of my bad practices.

As they say too much of something is bad for you.

I guess the same that you can verify that the website you are going to partner with is good. You should avoid scammy sites at any cost. It will be better for you to not create a backlink at all rather than on a domain with eyes only on making money rather than help people.

This might as well be junk to be honest.

Using Private Blog Networks

Why would having a team of websites where they post each other’s links be a bad idea? It all boils down to quality.

When you have “friends” link to your post just for the sake of it, chances are it doesn’t matter if the post being circulated is neither accurate nor is it reliable, laden with grammar errors or just plain bad. You also have no choice but to return the favor.

Yikes!

Not Doing Link Reclamation and Rechecks

Just like when you get ready for a long drive, you check your tires, light, oil —the works, you need to also check the elements that make your posts work.

Have you tried clicking on a link just to end up at a page that says “error 404?” Annoying right? Exactly. So, imagine how this wastes your well written post and its opportunity to bring in backlinks. Your business is definitely diverse and there would be a need to change over time.

There would be a need for you to add new pages, new articles, change URLs and the backlinks pointing to some of your pages might be broken.

Link Building on Unrelated Niche Sites

Imagine reading an article about blue light protection glasses only to click a link that leads to —how to make money through surveys.

Desperate much?

This is definitely how people will think of your post when this happens. Thread this business with class.

The Big No-No’s in Backlink Building (stay away from these shady stuff)

Spam Link Building Strategies

How to Get Backlinks for My Website email 29853 640

There’s nothing more annoying than spamming people. And were not talking about the one you have for breakfast.

If you have good content and follow the healthy practices of building links, you don’t need to do any flooding of someone’s comment section with your link. If you just focus on creating a website whose main goal is to help people; you will get excellent search ranking results.

So unless you want google to shut you down for spamming, just skip this technique.

Buying or Selling Links

You can’t exchange links for money. If someone considers this strategy, then this is just low key cheating the system. Why? As much as possible, google would want to rate content according to how significant and valuable it is to users.

You should instead focus more on increasing the quality of the content you are putting out there. You do this up to the point that other sites want to take your work as a reference. Cool right? And if backlinks are really useful to you, you can ask your content writers to create guest blog posts on other websites or even put press articles in your list of options.

Inappropriate Directory Submissions

In the early beginnings of SEO, directories were considered the best starting point to any website who wishes to establish links online.

The bad thing is, some people have abused and misused this link building practice to the point that they even put up links in directories that are already outside the scope of their niche. Search engines can penalize websites for having many directory backlinks that are not even used by their target audience.

Directories aren’t generally bad in fact it provided a way for search engine web crawlers to find a website relevant to a user’s query. It’s just a matter of how you use them in SEO that matters.

Cloaking

Always put in mind that when you create content, it should be for the greater good. However, this doesn’t seem to be everyone’s goal.

Cloaking is an SEO technique in which the content shown to the search engine spider is not exactly the same thing that is presented to the user’s browser. This is done by delivering content based on the IP addresses or the User-Agent HTTP header of the user requesting the page. Shady? You bet.

Backlink Building —Final Thoughts

In their usual manner, Google also rewarded sites that had natural backlinks. Having such links is an indication that such sites can be trusted and that they have worked really hard to earn their links.

    • Thank you Norman,
I’m glad you learned a lot about how to build backlinks.
This issue of how to get backlinks for my website is complex. There are many differing views and ways of doing link building.

There are many successful bloggers that focus purely on producing quality content that people will naturally link to – John Dykstra is one shining example.

On the other hand there are courses that encourage heavily a more active link building strategy with a lot of email outreach or guest blogging.
Then the issue of how to build links has so many right, shady and outright wrong ways to do it. I hope this post has given you a solid base of knowledge to choose your blogging strategy.

The more websites that link to your website, the higher base of authority (Domain Authority) you will have in the eyes of search engines.
